Taktsang, the Tiger’s Nest, clings to a cliff high above the Paro valley. Reaching it on foot is a highlight of many journeys to Bhutan, and with the right plan it is achievable for most reasonably fit travellers.
How long does it take?
Allow around four to five hours for the return walk, plus time at the monastery and for rests. Many people take longer, and that is fine: the trail is not a race.
How hard is it?
The path climbs steadily through forest, with uneven ground and many steps near the monastery. There is a cafeteria viewpoint about halfway, a good place to rest. Good shoes, water, sun protection and a light waterproof layer make a big difference.
Why it needs its own day
We always give the hike a full day, with nights in Paro before and after. It should never share a day with a long drive or an international flight.
Respect at the monastery
Taktsang is a sacred site. Dress modestly, leave bags and cameras where asked, and follow the current rules for entry and photography.
Most of our Signature Travels include the hike. Ask us if you would like to add it to any journey.
