High Himalayas and trekking landscapes

Bhutan’s northern border runs along the high Himalaya. Here, glacial valleys, yak pastures and peaks above 7,000 metres are reached only on foot. Much of this land lies within Jigme Dorji National Park.

Places to know

  • Jomolhari: one of Bhutan’s most sacred peaks, seen from the Jangothang base area on the Jomolhari trek.
  • Laya: a highland village in Gasa district, where women traditionally wear conical bamboo hats.
  • Lunana: a remote region crossed by the long Snowman Trek.
  • Gasa: the northern district, known for its hot springs.

Travelling here

Northern Bhutan is for trekkers. Routes are high, remote and seasonal, and need good fitness, acclimatisation and careful planning. Our Jomolhari Trek is the classic introduction.
