Forests and subtropical landscapes

Southern Bhutan descends to warm, forested foothills along the border with India. It is greener and more humid than the high valleys, with a mix of cultures and land border towns that connect Bhutan with India.

Places to know

  • Phuentsholing: the main land border town with India in the south-west.
  • Gelephu: a southern town and land entry point in the south-central region.
  • Royal Manas National Park: subtropical forest and grassland in the south, important for wildlife.
  • Samdrup Jongkhar: the south-eastern border town, gateway to eastern Bhutan.
