Bhutan’s temples and dzongs are living places of worship, and many dzongs are also working government offices. Visitors are welcome, and a few simple customs show respect.
Dress
- Cover shoulders and knees: long sleeves and long trousers or skirts.
- Remove hats inside temples and, where asked, shoes.
- For festivals and dzongs, smart clothes are appreciated.
Inside temples
- Photography is usually not allowed inside shrines. Ask your guide.
- Walk clockwise around chortens, temples and prayer wheels.
- Do not point your feet at altars or touch religious objects.
- Speak quietly and follow the guide’s lead.
Meeting people
Always ask before photographing people, especially monks, children and people at prayer. A smile and a simple “kuzuzangpo la” (hello) are always welcome.
