Government rules and fees can change at short notice. Check the official sources on this page before you travel.

Australian citizens need a visa to visit Bhutan. The visa is applied for online before you travel, and your Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is paid as part of the same application.

What you need

  • A passport that is valid for your whole stay. Many travellers allow at least six months of validity; check the current rule when you apply.
  • A digital copy of your passport for the online application.
  • Your travel dates and itinerary, so the correct number of nights of SDF can be paid.
  • Payment for the one-off visa application fee and the SDF.

Who applies

You can apply yourself through the Department of Immigration’s online services, or your tour operator or hotel can apply on your behalf. When you travel with Let’s Travel Bhutan, we explain each step and can prepare the application with you.

Travel insurance

We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance, including medical evacuation. If you plan to trek, make sure your policy covers trekking at altitude. Check whether insurance is currently a condition of entry when you apply.

Arriving

Most visitors arrive by air at Paro International Airport. Bhutan also has land entry points on the border with India. Tell us how you plan to arrive and we will help with the details.
