Bhutan Visa & Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)

How Bhutan’s visa and Sustainable Development Fee work: what the SDF pays for, how much it is per night, and how it is paid with your visa.

Last checked October 20, 2026

Government rules and fees can change at short notice. Check the official sources on this page before you travel.

Bhutan follows a policy of high-value, low-impact tourism. Every visitor (with some exceptions, such as Indian nationals, who have separate arrangements) pays a Sustainable Development Fee for each night in the country, in addition to a one-off visa fee.

How much is it?

  • SDF: US$100 per adult per night, according to the official Bhutan Travel visa page (checked 20 October 2026). Concessionary rates apply to children.
  • Visa fee: a non-refundable, one-off application fee of US$40.

The current SDF rate was reduced in 2023 and has been reported as applying until 31 August 2027. Rates and dates are set by the Government of Bhutan and can change, so confirm them when you plan.

What the SDF supports

The fee funds projects that protect Bhutan’s environment and culture and support public services such as free healthcare and education. It is a government fee, separate from the cost of your tour.

How it is paid

The SDF is paid with your online visa application, for the number of nights you will stay. Your written proposal from us will show clearly whether the SDF and visa fee are included in the quoted price.
