Money, Payments, SIM Cards & Connectivity

Bhutan’s currency, using cards and cash, getting a local SIM, and what to expect from mobile signal and Wi-Fi.

Government rules and fees can change at short notice. Check the official sources on this page before you travel.

Money

Bhutan’s currency is the ngultrum (Nu), which is pegged to the Indian rupee. Cards are accepted in many hotels and larger shops, but cash is useful in markets, villages and small cafés. ATMs are found in the main towns.

Payments for your tour

Payment terms for your trip are set out clearly in your written proposal. We never ask you to pay before your itinerary and price are confirmed in writing.

SIM cards and connectivity

Local SIM cards are available from Bhutan’s mobile operators with a passport. Mobile signal is good in towns and along main roads but limited in remote valleys and on treks. Most hotels offer Wi-Fi, though speeds vary.
