Health, Fitness, Altitude & Travel Insurance

How fit you need to be for Bhutan, what to know about altitude, and why good travel insurance matters.

Government rules and fees can change at short notice. Check the official sources on this page before you travel.

Fitness

Most cultural tours involve gentle walking and plenty of steps. The Tiger’s Nest hike is a sustained climb of around four to five hours return. Treks need good fitness and, for high routes, previous hiking experience.

Altitude

Paro and Thimphu sit at roughly 2,200 to 2,400 metres, and passes and treks go much higher. Take the first days gently, drink plenty of water, and tell your guide if you feel unwell. If you have a medical condition, speak to your doctor before travelling.

Health

Bring any medication you need, and check recommended vaccinations with a travel health clinic before you go.

Travel insurance

We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance, including medical evacuation, for every traveller, and cover for trekking at altitude if you plan to trek.
