About this journey

Not every walker wants to camp at altitude. This journey combines day walks in the broad glacial valley of Phobjikha, including the Gangtey Nature Trail, with the cultural highlights of Thimphu, Punakha and Paro, staying in lodges and hotels throughout.

Routing is realistic: after Phobjikha you overnight in Punakha before continuing to Paro, so no day combines too much driving with sightseeing.

Tour highlights

  • Gangtey Goemba overlooking the Phobjikha valley
  • The Black-necked Crane Information Centre, when open

  • Thimphu's landmarks and Dochula Pass

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1 Arrive in Paro

Begin the day with a gentle arrival and transfer to your hotel, with time to rest and take in the mountain setting. The experience introduces the western valley’s rural scenery and traditional architecture, giving travellers context rather than simply moving between attractions. After a relaxed lunch, continue with a short orientation walk in Paro town or along a nearby road, depending on arrival time, while your guide introduces Bhutanese customs and practical walking advice. Later, enjoy a relaxed dinner and briefing for the following days, including suitable footwear, weather layers, and how the itinerary balances gentle walks with cultural visits.

  2. Day 2 Paro to Thimphu

Begin the day with the drive toward Thimphu, with a short stop at a heritage site or scenic viewpoint when timing allows. The experience introduces the route connecting western Bhutan’s valleys, giving travellers context rather than simply moving between attractions. After a relaxed lunch, visit Buddha Dordenma or the National Memorial Chorten, then take a gentle walk in the capital to observe daily life and the role of Buddhist landmarks in the city. Later, enjoy an easy evening and preparation for the scenic drive to Phobjikha, where temperatures and weather can differ from the lower valleys.

  3. Day 3 Thimphu to Phobjikha via Dochula

Begin the day with the drive over Dochula Pass, with time among the chortens and prayer flags if weather and visibility permit. The experience introduces high mountain passes and a broad glacial valley, giving travellers context rather than simply moving between attractions. After a relaxed lunch, continue through mountain villages and forest toward Phobjikha, then visit Gangtey Goemba if open. Your guide will explain the valley’s rural character and its significance as winter habitat for black-necked cranes. Later, enjoy a relaxed walk near the accommodation and a briefing for the next day’s trail, including the need to stay on marked paths and respect farmland and wildlife.

  4. Day 4 Gangtey Nature Trail and valley exploration

Begin the day with a guided walk on the Gangtey Nature Trail, following a route through open meadows, woodland, and villages with views across the valley. The experience introduces gentle hiking, highland meadows, and conservation, giving travellers context rather than simply moving between attractions. After a relaxed lunch, visit the Black-necked Crane Information Centre when open, especially during the winter season, to learn about crane migration and conservation; outside that season, focus on the valley’s ecology and farming landscape. Later, enjoy a quiet evening at the lodge or guesthouse, with time for photography and conversation about how conservation and community livelihoods interact in this highland environment.

  5. Day 5 Phobjikha to Punakha

After breakfast, enjoy a short morning walk in Phobjikha if weather and trail conditions are suitable, then begin the drive to Punakha. Allow several hours for the mountain road and plan comfort stops rather than trying to cover the valley and reach Paro on the same day. On arrival, visit Punakha Dzong if opening hours and access allow, or take a gentle riverside walk and leave the main sightseeing for the following morning. Check in and enjoy an unhurried evening in the warmer valley. Overnight in Punakha. The next day can be used for Punakha sightseeing and the drive to Paro, or the tour can add another night if guests prefer a slower pace. This avoids combining Phobjikha walking, Punakha visits, and the full drive to Paro in one overloaded day.

  6. Day 6 Punakha to Paro

After breakfast, visit Punakha Dzong if it was not possible the previous day, or take a short riverside walk near the suspension bridge. Leave Punakha by late morning for the drive to Paro via Dochula Pass. Allow around four hours of driving, plus stops, lunch, traffic, and weather; the day should not be planned as if the journey were a quick transfer. On arrival in Paro, check in and keep the evening free. Overnight in Paro. The following morning should be the departure day, with no strenuous activity scheduled. If the package must remain six days, remove either the Punakha overnight or the Phobjikha component rather than compressing the route into an unrealistic day.

  7. Day 7 Departure from Paro

After an overnight in Paro, enjoy breakfast and prepare for the airport transfer. Confirm the pickup time against the flight schedule and current road conditions, and leave a generous check-in buffer. No major attraction or strenuous walk is planned today. If the flight is late and the transfer timing allows, guests may take a short stroll around Paro town, but the guide should prioritize a calm departure. Before checkout, check passports, luggage, and any outstanding hotel charges. Transfer to Paro International Airport for the onward flight. Keeping this day separate from the Punakha-to-Paro drive makes the tour more comfortable and reduces the risk that mountain-road delays affect an international connection.

Mountain roads are narrow and winding. Driving times in this itinerary are estimates before stops, roadworks and weather, and are confirmed with you before travel.

What is included

Inclusions, hotel standards and the treatment of the Sustainable Development Fee and visa are confirmed in your written proposal, based on your dates, group size and preferences. We do not publish fixed prices or inclusions until they are confirmed with our suppliers.
