About this journey
Short on time? This six-day journey introduces Bhutan’s western valleys: the capital Thimphu, Dochula Pass, Punakha Dzong and Paro, with a full day reserved for the hike to Tiger’s Nest.
We market it honestly as six days. Five days cannot comfortably include arrival, Thimphu, Punakha, the drive back to Paro, the Tiger’s Nest hike and departure.
Tour highlights
- A full day for the Tiger's Nest hike
- Thimphu's highlights
- Dochula Pass
- Punakha Dzong
- A night in Paro before departure
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 Arrive in Paro and travel to Thimphu
Arrive at Paro International Airport and meet your local team before driving to Thimphu, with a brief scenic stop if arrival time allows. The experience introduces a first look at Bhutan’s valley scenery and capital, giving travellers context rather than simply moving between attractions. After a relaxed lunch, settle into the hotel and take a short orientation walk through the capital, noticing the combination of traditional architecture, modern shops, and Buddhist landmarks. Later, enjoy dinner and a briefing about the compact itinerary, confirming opening hours, walking expectations, and the best order for visits based on weather and flight timing.
Day 2 Thimphu sightseeing and Punakha transfer
Visit Buddha Dordenma or the National Memorial Chorten, followed by a cultural institution if open and suitable for the schedule. The experience introduces the capital’s highlights and a scenic mountain crossing, giving travellers context rather than simply moving between attractions. After a relaxed lunch, drive across Dochula Pass toward Punakha, stopping among the chortens and prayer flags when weather permits. The descent reveals a warmer valley with cultivated fields and scattered villages. Later, arrive in Punakha and enjoy a relaxed evening. Because this is a short trip, the guide will prioritize key experiences while avoiding unsafe rushing or overly late driving.
Day 3 Punakha sightseeing and overnight
Spend the morning exploring Punakha rather than driving immediately back to Paro. Visit Punakha Dzong, subject to access and opening hours, and learn about its religious and historical role at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. If the group is comfortable walking, add the suspension bridge or a gentle riverside stroll; avoid stacking the day with several distant stops. Enjoy lunch in the valley and check in to the Punakha accommodation, leaving the afternoon for rest or a short village walk. Overnight in Punakha. The following day is reserved for the drive to Paro. This gives guests time to experience the valley rather than treating the dzong as a brief stop between long drives.
Day 4 Drive to Paro and overnight
After breakfast, leave Punakha for Paro via Dochula Pass. Allow approximately four hours for the drive itself and add time for a viewpoint stop, refreshments, lunch, traffic, and changing weather. This is a scenic transfer day, not a suitable day for the Tiger’s Nest hike. On arrival, check in at the Paro hotel and, if time and energy permit, visit one nearby site such as Kyichu Lhakhang or enjoy a gentle walk through town. Keep the afternoon flexible and prepare for the next day’s hike by checking footwear, water, sun protection, and weather layers. Overnight in Paro. Separating the transfer from the hike gives guests a full, rested day for Taktsang and avoids combining several hours on the road with a demanding uphill walk.
Day 5 Tiger’s Nest hike
Reserve this full day for the hike to Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest). After breakfast, drive to the trailhead and allow around four to five hours for the return walk, with extra time for rests and visiting the monastery. The climb is sustained and includes uneven steps; guests should wear suitable shoes, carry water, and bring weather protection. Pause at the cafeteria viewpoint and continue only at a comfortable pace. Follow the current site rules for entry and photography. Return to Paro in the afternoon for lunch and recovery time, with no international flight scheduled for today. Overnight in Paro. The package should be marketed as at least six days if it includes arrival, Thimphu, Punakha, the drive back to Paro, the Tiger’s Nest hike, and departure. Do not advertise this five-day sequence as if all those experiences fit comfortably.
Day 6 Departure from Paro
Enjoy breakfast and prepare for the airport transfer after the Tiger’s Nest hike the previous day. The driver should confirm pickup time based on the flight schedule and leave enough time for check-in and any road delays. No strenuous activity or distant sightseeing is planned today. If the flight is late and there is a comfortable buffer, guests may take a short walk around Paro town or visit a nearby café. Check travel documents, luggage, and hotel extras before checkout. Transfer to Paro International Airport for departure. The package should be sold as six days and five nights if it includes Thimphu, Punakha, the return drive to Paro, the Tiger’s Nest hike, and an unhurried departure.

What is included
Inclusions, hotel standards and the treatment of the Sustainable Development Fee and visa are confirmed in your written proposal, based on your dates, group size and preferences. We do not publish fixed prices or inclusions until they are confirmed with our suppliers.
Questions about this tour
Can this tour be done in five days?
Not comfortably. Arrival, Thimphu, Punakha, the drive back to Paro, the Tiger’s Nest hike and departure need six days to avoid rushing. If you only have five days, we can suggest a shorter route without Punakha.
How hard is the Tiger’s Nest hike?
It is a steady climb of around four to five hours return on uneven steps, with its own full day.
Is six days enough to see Bhutan?
It is a good introduction to the western valleys. If you can add days, consider Phobjikha or a slower pace.
Which day do we fly out?
Day 6, after a night in Paro, so the flight never depends on the hike or a long drive.
